When Jeremy and I moved into our new antebellum style home last fall, we didn’t have nearly enough furniture to fill it. He spent the majority of his expendable cash trying to finish up the house, which went seriously over budget. I have been buying pieces when I get extra money, but I’ve also been trying to save money for our wedding, which is just a few months away. Our double front porch was the first thing that visitors and passersby noticed about our home, and it has a scenic view of the barn and pond. We do our best to keep our porch looking nice and clean by getting a company that does pressure washing houston to clean it. Unfortunately patio furniture was on the bottom of my purchase list; it just wasn’t in my budget. I had a set of four canary yellow Adirondack style chairs that I placed on the front porch for seating until I could save up for patio furniture. They were distinctly visible from the road. Shortly after Jeremy and I moved in, he brought his grandmother over to the house. When we were pulling up the driveway, she commented, “The house is lovely, but I’m not sure about those yellow chairs.” I decided that day that those chairs really needed to go.
I browsed dozens of home decor magazines, and dog-eared pages of styles that I liked. The facade of our home really resonated traditional Americana design, especially with the upright columns. I love the look of wicker, and the red, white, and blue color scheme. No matter how many design styles that I previewed, I always came back to Americana decor. The colors complemented the tumbled brick exterior of our house, and the classic design would never go out of style. I wanted our space to be casual and inviting. I could combine my love of antiques with patriotic appeal.
Here is the space before I added furniture:
While browsing online, I saw an ad for the Pier 1 Imports Outdoor Living collection. I loved the clean lines of the Coco Cove Wicker Settee and matching chairs in Mocha. The price was affordable, and I have had a good experience in the past with Pier 1 Imports furniture being durable. I thought with the added protection of the upper porch, a solid wicker set such as Coco Cove would last for several years; it was an investment that I was willing to make.
I added a few other outdoor pieces from Pier 1 Imports including some comfy decorative throw pillows, a patriotic eagle, some non-breakable glasses for entertaining, napkins, cushions, a galvanized beverage tub for drinks, lanterns for added light at night, and a garden flag. I also added a few other pieces that I already had, like my potting bench that doubles as a food/drink station when I’m entertaining guests, and an indoor/outdoor pouf that can be used as an ottoman or side table.
We’ve received so many compliments on the beautiful wicker seat from Pier 1 Imports, and I’ll add that it’s very comfortable. We love to sit downstairs while Gabe plays in the yard, or to relax in the late afternoon while just enjoying the view. The space isn’t so trendy that it will go out of style, and I can always add more Americana themed pieces to my collection.
There is an added bonus to many of my purchases: I plan on using a large portion of my purchase to help decorate for our wedding on the farm. The lanterns can be scattered throughout the ceremony, and the wicker set can be staged for extra outdoor seating. What do you think of the settee and chair with the barn as the backdrop?
Are you expecting very many guests this summer? Next week I’ll be setting up my porch to help entertain some family and friends. I hope you’ll stop by and browse my outdoor entertaining tips, and check out a few easy recipes that will easily serve a small crowd.
