My great grandmother, Mamaw Cole was slightly allergic to chocolate, but that didn’t stop her from eating it. She would hide Hershey’s Miniatures in the pocket of her recliner and much to the dismay of my grandfather, she would eat one from time to time. She would always share her treats with the host of great grandchildren that visited her home daily. Mamaw had an old long handled fork she kept in the silverware drawer; if we were really good, she would let me roast marshmallows over her gas stove to make S’mores for everyone. I cherish those childhood memories. Twenty years later, I still use the same trusted ingredients that great grandmother purchased for us to make S’mores such as Hershey’s Milk Chocolate, Honey Maid Graham Crackers, and Kraft Jet-Puffed Marshmallows.
When we were on the the way home a few night ago, Gabe asked for me to call his Mamaw Lesa (my mom) to come visit him. He told her that he wanted to go fishing and camping down by the pond. What campfire is complete without making S’mores? We typically keep all of the ingredients for S’mores in our pantry, but I decided to spice things up a bit. I grabbed a few other chocolates, fruits, and nuts to add to our S’mores party bar. When my mom arrived we loaded everything in the truck and headed down by the pond where Jeremy had built a fire.
Here are a few of my choices for creating the perfect DIY S’mores Bar:
- Hershey's Milk Chocolate Bars
- Honey Maid Graham Cracker Squares
- Kraft's Jet-Puffed Marshmallows
- Optional:
- Hershey's Special Dark Chocolate
- Hershey's Cookies'n'Creme
- Hershey's Milk Chocolate with Almonds
- REESE'S Peanut Butter Cups
- Almond Joy
- Mounds
- Cadbury's Dairy Milk Caramello
- Thinly sliced strawberries
- Roasted sliced plantains
- Pitted sliced cherries
- Pecans
- Almonds
- Toast marshmallow until is begins to melt and caramelize
- Place marshmallow on graham cracker topped with choice of chocolate bar and/or fruit
- Top with second graham cracker square
These are ingredient suggestions; you’ll need your three basic ingredients and add things according to guest preferences. Our family made personal creations. My personal favorite was roasted plantain with two squares of Cadbury’s Dairy Milk Caramello. Jeremy liked his S’more made with Hershey’s Cookies’n’Creme. My mom roasted some strawberries and topped them with Hershey’s Special Dark Chocolate to make her S’mores.
Jeremy’s parents came to visit our campfire and made their own creations using REESE’S and Almond Joy instead of Hershey’s Milk Chocolate. It was a evening well spent around the campfire. We fished, cooked over the open flame, and made memories as a family; In my best Appalachian accent, “We made S’more memories.”
Look for these displays in your local Walmart. They’ll have the three main ingredients to make S’mores such as Hershey’s Milk Chocolate Bars, new Kraft Jet Puffed S’moremallows, and Honey Maid Graham Cracker Squares.
Do you only prefer traditional S’mores or do you get creative with your combinations?

What a fantastic memory to have of your great grandmother! I love when a tradition is handed down, such as making s’mores. We often stick with the traditional s’more, but I’d love to add caramel or peanut butter to mind when given the chance! #client
