A few days ago, I walked into my closet, and I thought I would scream. It was crammed pack with stuff, and in complete disarray. I own 5 pairs of cowboy boots, and I generally wear one pair a handful of times per year. Why are the other 4 taking up space in my closet? I had so many pieces that were ill-fitting; many still had tags on them, and most of which was purchased on a whim when I found them on sale. I purged my closet, and nearly cut my clothing, shoes, and accessories down by half. I don’t like chaos and disorder, and my closet was making my anxiety symptoms worse. I spent three hours sorting items and trying pieces on. Some of my favorite items in my closet I’ve had longer than 5 years.
I still have a few pieces that I owned my senior year of high school and early years in college. Who would have known that the dress that I wore to the hospital Christmas party my senior year would actually last 18 years? I’ve discovered that properly fitting, well designed and made clothing can last for many years if it has been properly taken care of.
My secret weapon isn’t really a secret; I use Downy Fabric Conditioner regularly in my laundry. Many modern washing machines have made it easier than ever to use fabric conditioners. My washer has a special slot than I can pour Downy Fabric Conditioner in, and it’s dispersed by my washing when needed. In older washing machines and some newer models, you have to wait until the rinse cycle to apply fabric conditioner so it isn’t washed away during the wash cycle. I’ve heard it said a few times that fabric conditioner can actually help your washing machine to run more smoothly too. I know a great washing machine repair guy (Mark’s Appliance Repair) who I can always call if I need to, but it’s nice to know I’m doing something that’s going to help me avoid the inconvenience this would cause. However, you never know with these sorts of appliances, so it’s good to have someone in mind if you ever do need a new washing machine. One of my friends recently purchased one of the best top loaders on the market after her washing machine broke and it does look a lot better than mine. Maybe I’ll keep my eye out for a new washing machine, especially since I’ve had this one for so long!
Do you know how fabric conditioners work? Downy conditions each fiber so that the friction that occurs while washing is less damaging. It also strengthens and lubricates fibers which can help your clothing last longer. I feel less guilty about spending money on a nice dress or cardigan if I know that I can wear it for 5 years or more.
There are things you can do in addition to using Downy Fabric Conditioner to help extend the life of your clothing/items such as:
- Washing your garments inside out
- Running your washing machine on cold and/gentle cycle
- Using low heat to dry items
- Treating fabric shortly after spills and stains happen
Downy Fabric Conditioner helps to keep my clothes fresher longer, and they’re less likely to wrinkle compared to using detergent alone; I hate using an iron.
