My son is 6 years old and he loves science and math; and I love that he loves science and math. We routinely try to encourage him to learn new concepts in those fields. It’s important that he embraces them now, instead of waiting until he’s older. Children can become discouraged when they’re older, and they struggle with concepts. Day-to-day, it’s easier to teach him small things that become the foundation for larger concepts that he’ll be taught later. We often have discussions in the car, during time that would have otherwise been wasted driving. The point of my ramble is that it’s never too early to start imprinting a love of learning, but also basic principals from science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). I was excited to read about one of the newest programs at the Boy & Girls Clubs of America called My.Future.
The Boys & Girls Clubs of America My.Future platform:
The Boys & Girls Clubs of America My.Future platform gives kids the opportunity to discover and develop passions in STEM fields. STEM jobs in the U.S. are projected to grow nearly twice as fast as other fields by 2018. Kids and teens will need STEM related skills to compete in a global economy and job market. The My.Future platform delivers programming that they hope will spark interest in STEM fields by encouraging kids to explore topics that already interesting to them. Research has shown that out-of-school programs advance science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) knowledge, and increase interest in these careers. The Boys & Girls Clubs of America have been leaders in out-of-school time programming for 150 years.
The Boys & Girls Clubs of America My.Future platform is supported by Comcast NBCUniversal. They hope to inspire kids to develop skills to thrive in an ever-evolving world. Extension of the program hopes to further interests in robotics, game design, programming, and online journalism. Comcast NBCUniversal involvement with My.Future hopes to encourage kids and teens to better understand their media world, identify and develop digital interests, and it allows them to earn certifications as they make progress.
