Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party

October 11, 2015

I’m a big kid at heart, and that can be seen in my love of all things Disney. When I was growing up, most of our big vacations were taken to Walt Disney World; in fact, the very last vacation my family took before my parent’s divorce was a weeklong trip to Walt Disney World. I was about my son’s age when my parents first took my brother Brandon and I. This was Gabe’s second trip to Walt Disney World; we went 2 1/2 years ago when I ran the Disney Princess Half Marathon and created so many memories. I think we enjoyed this trip more than the previous one, Gabe is tall enough (and brave enough) to ride most of the big rides and he loved Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party (who am I kidding? the adults loved it too). The Halloween and fall decorations around the parks were gorgeous, and I could sit for hours people watching and taking in all the creative costumes. It was worth every…single…penny… just to see the smiles and excitement. Today I’m sharing a few tips to help you plan your trip to Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party.

Have You Awakened?: Force Friday

September 4, 2015

When I was a young girl, my now late brother Brandon and I dressed up as Luke and Leia not once, but twice. A few years ago, I dressed my son up as Luke for Halloween. It was bittersweet; he looked a lot like my brother did when he was dressed up as Luke. When I was his age I knew that I wanted an Ewok as a pet, and I wanted to grow up to be as pretty as Princess Leia. I’m so excited about STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS, and its release to theaters on December 18th: just 3 days after what would have been Brandon’s 34th birthday. I have lots of fond Star Wars Memories, including my brother pretending to be a Dark Sith Lord and whacking me in the head with a tomato stake playing “light sabers.” Has the Force awakened any memories for you? Today is Force Friday, and some fantastically fun Star Wars merchandise has hit retailers’ shelves. You can read more about it in the press release below.

“I’m a Fandango Family Ambassador and I received compensation for this post, however all opinions are entirely my own.”

I’m not sure that my son has stopped talking about the latest Disney Pixar film Inside Out, since we came home from the theater.  We picked up a few Inside Out toys because of his interest in the movie. Inside Out is a great way to talk to your children about their emotions, and it was a great family movie night experience for us. Gabe loves to help me cook, and we created these fun “core memory” Inside Out cupcakes. I tried to make them simple enough that all cooking skill levels can make and decorate them. Whether you’re planning an Inside Out themed party, or even just spending time with your child cooking in the kitchen, these are a crowd pleaser.

Last year, I received a weekly report from Gabe’s preschool teacher; one of the items they were assessed on was their ability to control their emotions appropriately. I’ll be honest, I hadn’t put much thought into assessing or acknowledging appropriate emotional responses in my preschooler. He expressed emotions such as sadness, joy, and anger, but I wasn’t sure if his response was always appropriate? I struggled with figuring out how to talk with and an explain emotional responses, which are vital to a child’s development. Disney’s latest cartoon Inside Out discusses many of the main emotions that a child (and adult) feels. We went to the drive-in last weekend to watch the movie and he was mesmerized by the characters. It wasn’t until we were browsing at our local Walmart last week and he spotted the Disney’s Inside Out merchandise that I realized how much he had absorbed from the movie. Today, I’m sharing a tutorial for making wall art/plush holder using merchandise from the Disney’s Inside Out toy line.

I might live in a house full of boys, but we still love Tinker Bell. It began with Peter Pan, and we have watched every Tinker Bell movie since. We even stood in line at Walt Disney World to get fan photos with our favorite fairies. My son was very excited when he watched the trailer for Tinker Bell and the Legend of the NeverBeast; Who doesn’t love a good beast? He and I saw a few Tinker Bell items at our local Walmart, and he “had to have” the Tinker Bell bubble wand. We decided to bake some Tinker Bell cupcakes to celebrate the release of Tinker Bell and the Legend of the NeverBeast.

One of my favorite family activities is family movie night. I love finding a great movie that the entire family will enjoy, making snacks, and cuddling on the couch.

The release of Disney’s Big Hero 6 made my task much easier this week. I picked up the movie from Target, and I grabbed a few supplies to make white chocolate-coated chocolate marshmallow treats inspired by one of the film’s lead characters, Baymax.
